Domain Names

The first step to establishing your web presence is registering a domain name. Whether your are an individual or a business, with a domain name you can pick a memorable and appropriate name that will make it easier for people to find you on the web.
Registering couldn't be easier with our simple and secure ordering system.

UK domain names alone are being registered at an astronomical rate of more than 200,000 per month so if your preferred domain name is still available for registration we highly recommend that you register it as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

What is a domain name?

Computers connected to the Internet have unique numerical addresses so that electronic information is delivered to the right place. The domain name system (DNS) translates the numerical addresses of computers into more user-friendly names. The resulting domain names are easier to remember and help people to find information on the Internet.

Domain names are used to identify particular web pages. For example, in the web site address "http://www.familyhistoryhosting.uk.com/index.html" the domain name is familyhistoryhosting.uk.com.

Domain names are also used in e-mail addresses, for example, user@http://www.familyhistoryhosting.uk.com, that enable people to send and receive electronic messages.

What is a TLD?

For example, www.hallamfamily.co.uk is in top-level domain "uk" (for United Kingdom).

Every other country has its own top-level domain - uk for the United Kingdom, and for example ".us" for the U.S.A. Within the .us domain, there are subdomains for the fifty states, each generally with a name identical to the state's postal abbreviation. These are rarely used however.
Within the .uk domain, there is a .ac.uk subdomain for academic sites and a .co.uk domain for commercial ones. Other top-level domains may be divided up in similar ways.

In the US and some other countries, the following top-level domains are used much more widely than the country code:

  • .com - commercial bodies
  • .edu - educational institutions
  • .gov - U. S. government
  • .mil - U. S. armed services
  • .net - network operators
  • .org - other organisations

Family History Hosting offers .co.uk, .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, and most european and international domain names. We provide fully comprehensive domain name maintenance and administration services via our easy to use online control panel / user interface.

What is a domain name Registrar?

A domain name Registrar is authorised by ICANN to register and manage domain names. Registrars are responsible for maintaining the information entered into the WhoIs database.

What is DNS?

DNS stands for Domain Name Servers. DNS allows a domain name to resolve to the numeric IP address assigned by Family History Hosting UK. When you move hosting companies, you will need to update your DNS to ensure that the domain name points to the correct server.

What is your Domain Name Server (DNS) information?

Our DNS servers are listed as follows:
 ns.mainnameserver.com
 ns2.mainnameserver.com

Please make sure that you point to both of our servers and make sure that we are aware that you are pointing to our servers so that we can add the proper records.

Do I own the domain name?

Yes, you are the owner of the domain name. If you move your domain name to another hosting company, you will still manage your domain name via Family History Hosting UK if you registered it through us. Additionally, we will continue to collect registration fees for your domain name as long as you would like to maintain that name.

Is my domain registration information public?

Yes, the contact and registrant information is public record in the universally available Whois database. Complete and accurate information is required to maintain your domain registration.

I am registering a new domain name. Who is the registrar?

By using our website to register your domain name, we can assure that your DNS records are set correctly and that there are no problems with your services. We partner with Enom, Inc. as our registrar

Can you host any domain name?

Yes. However if you have any domain name already registered, we can provide a service for you.

How long does it take to process a new domain name or to transfer an existing domain name?

Domains take up to 72 hours to process and get working on your website. For domain transfers the start time begins when you approve the domain transfer.

Is hosting a domain name the same thing as transferring a domain name?

No, when you open an account with us you are only opening a hosting account. A hosting account is essentially a rental agreement for space on our FHUK Hosting Servers, to house files.
Transferring your existing domain name is highly recommended. When you transfer your domain name, you are changing the company who is responsible for maintaining the registration information and the domain name renewal. Only with full access to your domain name we can we guarantee that your domain name is correctly pointed to our servers.

Can I transfer my domain registration?

Most domains qualify for Registrar transfer. Below are specific requirements and limitations you can use to determine if your domain name registration can be transferred:
  • Your domain name has been registered with your current registrar for at least 60 days and is in good financial standing.
  • The administrative contact email address on file for the domain name is a valid working email address. If you do not have access to this email address, please contact your current registrar for information on changing it before initiating a transfer of registrar request.
  • The domain name cannot be involved in a domain dispute or have a registry lock.
  • The domain name cannot be expired or within 10 days of expiring. If the domain has expired or is about to expire, you will need to renew with your current registrar before a transfer of registrar can occur.

Please note that eligibility for transfer does not guarantee that the transfer request will be successful.

How do I update my DNS to Family History Hosting UK if it is registered with another registrar?

When you purchased your domain name you should have received a username and password combination from your registrar. You will need this information in order to modify your domain name to point to our servers. If you do not have this information you will need to contact the company you purchased the domain name from.
Once you have this information you can login to your Registrar's website and make modifications to your domain name record. First, login to your Registrar and look for something called DNS, Domain Name Servers or Name Servers. You will need to modify these entries to reflect our Name Servers as indicated below:
  • Name Server #1
    ns.mainnameserver.com

  • Name Server #2
    ns2.mainnameserver.com

Make sure that the entries above are the only ones showing and delete any others that are listed. Some registrars require you to verify this change via an email.
Once you have successfully modified the DNS entries it can take 24-72 hours for them to propagate throughout the Internet.

Can Family History Hosting UK transfer my domain name Registrar to Family History Hosting UK?

Yes, we can help you switch your domain name registration to Family History Hosting UK. Let Family History Hosting UK assist you in your Domain Management, please contact us.

What is a Domain Pointer?

A domain pointer is a separate domain name that points to your domain hosted with us or any IP address you provide to us. This allows a visitor to access the same website with both domain names. For example: You have a website called xthisx.com, but have registered another domain name called xthatx.com. A domain pointer allows you to set up the xthatx.com domain name, so that when a user types in xthatx.com, they will be sent to the xthisx.com website. This not only applies to the user's website, it also works with email accounts. For example jerry@xthisx.com and jerry@xthatx.com point to the same mailbox. Both domains will have to be hosted with us. Note that we can only point to domain names or IP addresses and not to website subdirectories.

What is an MX Record?

An MX Record allows domain owners the ability to have their email services hosted at another location. The MX record will point to the IP address or hostname of their email server. An MX record is required for emails to process smoothly and correctly. If there are any further questions, please contact us
